Drones Versus Airplanes

Drone technology is taking off and more and more people are taking up flying drones as a hobby or pastime, but will there come a time when the competition for air space between drones and planes becomes a serious issue?

The popularity of drones is not going to go away any time soon so what should the regulators be doing in order to ensure people traveling in planes in our skies remain safe. Drones could very well pose a serious threat to air traffic especially as they get bigger in number and size.

Governments need to be thinking about this now before a major accident is caused. We need strong laws in place to eliminate the risk of a collision between a plane and a drone. Before it is too late.

The drone industry is booming and stands to make millions of dollars in revenue for the companies manufacturing them. They are not going to give up their quest for the right to use air space any time now or even more in the future.

So What Can Be Done to Ensure Ongoing Safety for Aeroplanes and their Passengers?

These are my thoughts

  1. Drone operators need to be licensed before they can fly in any air space.
  2. A carefully designed course needs to be devised which every operator must pass before he can purchase a drone.
  3. Drones need to have clearly defined identification so that if a law is broken they can be held accountable.
  4. Fines for breach of agreed licensing laws need to be far in excess of the value of the drone and the drone should be confiscated if the operator fails to comply.
  5. Planes need to be clearly marked especially on the underbelly, also so that they can be easily seen from the ground.
  6. Drone operators should also be required to take out an insurance policy to cover any damage they might incur to other property be it on the ground or in the air.

If drones are increasing in popularity and moving from the toy category to more commercial use then we need to be giving this issue close attention. Drones now are being used in a number of different applications below are a few of them, all of which are legitimate and as businesses get a hold of the value of drones as a very efficient and economically viable tool we will see their use increase even more.

  • Agricultural uses Drones on the farm
  • Real Estate agents Doing aerial photography of a property they wish to promote
  • Commercial Photographers for weddings, journalism special occasions.
  • Search and rescue Staying Safe with drones
  • Deliveries: pizzas, Amazon purchases, spare parts for broken down vehicles. see how Amazon uses drones.

These applications are already in use but as the technology develops the drones we see will be more prolific and more functional and affordable. Take a look at the following video which demonstrates a drone which can carry a passenger. You can easily see how they will increase in popularity and broaden the range of uses. It is hard to imagine what our world will look like in 10 – 20 years from now. Will we be using drones instead of cars to get from A- B. Instead of having a garage for our car we will have a landing pad for our drone.

The mind boggles at what the future may be like. What do you think? I guess our grand parents could not conceive all the advances in technology we have seen. We can only wonder at what the world will be like for our grand children.

I would just love to hear what you think  about the future use of drones and the issues around them as they become as commonplace as cars.  Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

  1. Wow! I didn’t realize that there were so many applications for drones. I knew that they could go up and take aerial photos. I think when you mentioned using them on a farm, I was a bit afraid that they were being used to dump fertilizer on crops. That didn’t seem right to me.
